This year’s theme for World Food Day is food waste – one of my true passions. Here are some quick tips from me you can use from your own kitchen
Hi my lovebugs
World Food Day holds a special place in my heart, because I’m all about sustainable food practices. Food waste is one of the biggest contributors to climate change, because it involves all of the environmental impacts of food production, but without any of the benefits of people being fed.
One of the main reasons I love partnering with Grundig is because of their global vision to increase food waste awareness by supporting the United Nation’s call to fight food waste.
They’ve reported that every year, 1.3 billion tonnes of food ends up in waste bins, and most of that comes from our very own households. It’s a really sobering thought when you consider that food could have fed 868 million hungry people. And, it’s four times the amount of food they would need to live healthy, nourished lives. Grundig has food waste stats up to the minute that you can look at, if you want to get a good idea of just how important it is to lessen it.
Lovebugs, the small things you can do at home to minimise food waste really do make a difference in the long run. Here are some of my top tips to combat food waste:
Store your food correctly. Bananas, avos, tomatoes, melons, peaches, pears and green onions are ethylene-gas producing foods. This means they promote ripening and can lead to spoiling – so don’t refrigerate them.
Invest in high-tech appliances that use clever technology to prolong the freshness of your ingredients. Many Grundig refrigerators use Fresh Meters, which help to monitor the lifecycle of your fresh meats. This smart innovation detects the odour level inside the fresh meter zone, and reflects the freshness levels with the colours red, yellow and green.
Take your leftovers to enjoy at work the next day. You’ll save so much money as well when you stop buying your lunch every day!
Food waste at a household level is substantial. That’s why I’m dedicated to creating delicious recipes to help prevent wasting food, and showing you how you can use those leftovers in creative and fun ways! Keep your eyes peeled for my new recipes, coming soon!
