Mzansi’s favourite chef, Lorna Maseko, has been traveling the world since the age of 16. Her travels started when she became South Africa’s first black principal ballet dancer which took her around the globe. Her time as a presenter on Top Billing also afforded her the opportunity to visit many exotic locations and lavish destinations around the world. Lorna still loves traveling and showcases this on her social media platforms constantly. She is also a premium member of the Emirates Skywards loyalty programme. With December holidays fast approaching, who better to give advice on your plans than the jetsetter herself. Below are Lorna’s recommendations and tips on having a unforgettable holiday this December.

What is the best destination to visit this December?

I haven’t quite decided what to do this December yet, but I know I want to be somewhere warm. Dubai is seeming like the best option because it’s close and you have the best of both worlds; sun, shopping and relaxation. Although I’ve been there before, doing it again would be my ultimate December destination this year.

What is the best international destination at the moment to visit, and why?

I’ve fallen in love with London again. I absolutely love the city, in the summer of course. The vibrancy from when you arrive at the airport to the quality of service at hotels; it’s really lovely. I also love Hong Kong – it’s almost like all the economies of the world meet there. You can find food from around the world and shop your heart out.

Best holiday where you can enjoy multiple destinations, great food and multiple activities to please the entire family (and that won’t break the bank)?

I’ve been to on two cruises this year with Crystal Cruises and Cruises International and enjoyed every second of them. What I love the most was the fact that I didn’t have to change hotels or flights, but went to multiple countries and cities. The convenience is amazing and the food experience is phenomenal. On one of their ships they have a Nobu, so you can imagine where I had dinner every night.

Best culinary experience to enjoy locally?

I love DW Eleven 13. I enjoy Martinus’ ethos on food as it’s really a labour of love.

Best summer activity locally?

I enjoy picnics and food markets. Being an absolute foodie, keeping my palate excited is one of my favorite things to do all year round.

Best local hidden gem?

Magoebaskloof is so gorgeous. I drove down there a few weeks back and literally got out my car to take pictures. South Africa is a beautiful country and I think people should explore before travelling out the country. We have such a gem of a country and continent that has so much to offer.
